Sinclair Broadcast Group’s WJLA Shines with Brightline
Sinclair’s Flagship Station, WJLA in Washington, DC, Airs with a New and Modern Look
The recent revamp of Studio A in Sinclair Broadcast Group’s flagship WJLA serving viewers in the Washington, DC metro is the latest in a series of close collaborations between one of the largest television operators in the U.S. and the lighting experts at Brightline. In a relationship that’s spanned several decades, the two companies have renovated hundreds of stations in markets across the country.
Getting TV stations on air is always a race against the clock that requires equal parts technical prowess and grace under pressure. Working repeatedly under such conditions has forged a turn-key approach between Sinclair and Brightline that results in a timely and seamless implementation of project after project. No one knows more about getting stations on air than the head of production at a large broadcast group. Mark Nadeau, Director of TV Production, Sinclair Broadcast Group, and Eric Castagne, Assistant Director of TV Production, have proven to be inspirational colleagues.
“Everything we learn from previous stations carries into the next,” explains Sam Cercone, Managing Partner, Brightline.. “It’s a very fluid way of working, with each station redesign further fine-tuning approach. I’ve learned and enjoyed so much working with my colleagues at Sinclair. The latest evidence is our work at WJLA, of which we’re extremely proud.”
The redesign at WJLA’s news studio was sweeping. Consisting of a full Brightline fixture package, the set is the new home for “7News,” “Good Morning Washington,” and “Fed Government Today.” In addition to the new 100% Brightline lighting system, the LED monitors weave in and around key areas of the set. The news desk has a digital screen displaying the 7News logo, while two pillars on each side of the desk serve as video walls with a curved panel behind the anchors. Along with XYZ axis pedestals and robotic cameras, the technology at WJLA is unparalleled.
Its creation coming directly through the U.S. Constitution, Washington D.C., a district of less than 10 miles square, is the “Seat of the Government of the United States”
and a worldwide center with diverse cultural influences. Informing the entire community along with the over 20 million annual visitors, domestic and international, is a gargantuan task that WJLA has met with dynamic creativity. The internal team at Sinclair handled everything from concept through installation, including the scenic design, resulting in a control and efficient consistency that contributed to the project’s brilliant success.
Founded as a family-owned business in 1921, Sinclair now owns almost 300 stations, and employs about 8,000 people. Brightline has lit over 100 SBG studios in the last decade, including The Tennis Channel and Bally Sports. With the significant energy savings that Sinclair has realized through its commitment to sustainability, the future indeed looks brighter.

Scripps Stations Across the Country Upgrade to LED with Brightline
KERO-TV in Bakersfield, CA joins its sister stations across Scripps Broadcasting with an LED studio lighting conversion featuring Brightline soft lights, spotlights, fresnels and rear-lit scenic panels
Bridgeville, PA – February 1, 2024 – Since its founding motto of 1923, “Give light and the people will find their own way,” Scripps Media continues to strive to shine a light on the truth. Now Brightline proudly shines its high-performance studio light in yet another Scripps’ station, delivering its anchors more vibrantly to your video screens.
KERO-TV is the most recent E.W. Scripps TV station to upgrade their studio lighting with a full Brightline system. Long known for its audio innovations, Bakersfield was home to Bakersfield Sound, producing honky tonk and rock legends like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Now the Bakersfield city adds video innovation to its roster, with KERO’s new 100% Brightline lighting system that increases operating efficiency while enhancing video results.
From Brightline’s all-in-one retrofit kit to turnkey lighting upgrades, over a dozen Scripps’ stations are now showcasing hot new looks with cool new lights.
“Scripps has a storied history in journalism and cable and is well regarded for its latest multi-platform initiatives,” says Sam Cercone, managing partner, Brightline. “Widely known for pioneering new technologies, the expansive lighting upgrades underway throughout the group further solidify its position as a broadcast innovator.”
From Nashville and Cincinnati to Denver and Tampa, Brightline relights underscore the Scripps’ commitment to sustainable technologies throughout all its endeavors. And when saving energy also enhances video aesthetics, the conversions are pure upside.
With turnkey packages that provide lighting for all aspects of the studio with wired or wireless DMX control, Brightline systems deliver improved performance, richer color saturation (97 CRI with 5600K), and a scalable approach to upgrading studios.
“With the retrofit kit, we can upgrade existing Brightline fluorescent systems to LED at an attractive cost through repurposing fixtures”, says Cercone. “And the high-color rendering LEDs enhance video. Upgrading to LED reduces energy consumption, renews the lifetime of the fixtures, and lowers maintenance costs, providing significant savings.”
Converting stations in Billings, Boise, Bozeman, Buffalo, Lexington, Milwaukee, Omaha and West Palm Beach, a team of skilled Brightline lighting directors have assisted local facilities with their installations.
Industry veteran Chris Boyd was the lighting director on the recent KERO-TV project. Chris emphasized that “Brightline LED fixtures offer the total package for studios of all sizes.” Next up, Boyd will visit KMGH-TV in Denver to supervise their turnkey Brightline lighting conversion. With the new KMGH facility scheduled to air in March, viewers can welcome Spring while watching their fresh new look.
“We appreciate our long and mutually beneficial relationship with Scripps,” adds Cercone, “and sharing our expertise to solve our clients’ challenges is what it’s all about for us. Like Scripps’ founders said, Give light…”

City Club of Cleveland Adds 12 Brightline Studio Fixtures to its Forum Room for Dual-Purpose, On-Stage Lighting
Bridgeville, Penn. – January 9, 2024 – Founded in 1912, the City Club of Cleveland, is one of the oldest independent free speech forums, renowned for its tradition of debate and discussion. When the organization moved to a new location in Cleveland’s Playhouse Square district in September of last year, it needed lighting that would be comfortable for those on stage while providing broadcast-quality illumination for the speakers as well as live streams and local PBS rebroadcasts.
The Forum Room at the City Club of Cleveland hosts roughly 100 programs a year, including weekly Friday Forums, which air on local NPR affiliate, WKSU, and are livestreamed to www.cityclub.org. The discussions are rebroadcast on the local PBS television channel, WVIZ, each Sunday morning.
The lighting for the new Forum Room had to be easy to control and adjust for non-AV professionals. And the fixtures must illuminate the Forum stage and provide broadcast quality video for the livestream audience. David Walters, Regional Sales Manager at iVideo, a leading supplier of audio/video technology based in Cleveland, recommended Brightline lighting for the job.
“We all knew we’d use LED lights,” said Walters, “but the stage couldn’t look like a TV Studio. It had to be lit in a way that allows the in-person attendees and virtual audiences to experience the event without it being overly bright or a distraction for those on stage.”
Walters decided on Brightline SeriesONE L1.2 studio fixtures. Twelve L1.2 lights now hang overhead in the Forum Room. The ceiling is white in color, so the lights were selected in a matching shade. “We’ve got a very blended look in the ceiling. The piping the fixtures hang from is also white. The lighting also uses wireless DMX controls, which avoids additional cabling from each fixture.”
The DMX controls, ease of use, and an improved, overall look made the strongest impression on City Club staff and colleagues. “Our partners at Ideastream Public Media, who produce our forums, greatly appreciate the color temperature control and ease of use,” reported Maria Gerstenberger, Digital Content Manager, the City Club of Cleveland. “They are very happy with the way the show is lit for broadcast.”
The Brightline L1.2 soft light utilizes > 97 CRI LEDs to emit high-quality illumination.
Weighing less than 13 pounds, the compact fixture is an asset when working with tight spaces. In addition to its extraordinary performance, the L1.2 features variable white color temperature, supporting optimized color matching throughout changes in ambient light.
“The feedback from the staff has been that the lights look great and are very easy to use,” continued Gerstenberger. “We just slide faders to adjust the lighting. Anyone from the staff can work with them, not just those in production or part of our technical crew.
“The lighting has enhanced the space tremendously. The lights themselves are visually appealing and complement the room’s décor. We love how they just blend in with the ceiling.”
“We couldn’t be happier to be part of this historic organization’s upgrade,” said Kathy Katz, Brightline managing partner. “The many supporters of the City Club of Cleveland will enjoy dramatically improved production values whether watching live streams, broadcasts, or in-person. I’d like to extend a special shout out to our Cleveland-based dealer, David Walters at iVideo, as well as our Lighting Designer and CAD Specialist, Leslie Moynihan, and Michael Zihmer, National Sales Manager, who all worked hard to find the best solution for the City Club of Cleveland.. They did a spectacular job.”

Color-Changing Capability, Compact Size, and Flexible Operation Make New Studio Shine for Collier County Sheriff’s Department
Brightline Studio, Profile Spotlight and Lupo Fresnels Selected for New Government TV Studio
Bridgeville, Penn. – December 6, 2023 – Lighting in confined spaces presents a unique challenge, but as demonstrated by the new tv production studio at the Collier County Sheriff’s department in Naples, Florida, flexibility is essential. Thanks to the color-changing capability and compact size of Brightline fixtures, lighting is broadcast-quality for each interview and stand-up shot. Brightline L1.2 studio lights, color changing Lupo fresnels, and Minnow profile spotlights were selected for the new studio – all calibrated for daylight color temperature.
Encore Broadcast Solutions, with headquarters in Tampa, served as the systems integration firm on the project, which consisted of set design, a control room with a Broadcast Pix GX-Hybrid video production switcher, three Panasonic AW-UE160 4K PTZ cameras, and Brightline lighting.
“Lighting is often thought of last in set design,” said Tampa-based Lighting Director Earl Thomas. “Once the set is there, you have to work with what you got. With this project, the set was pushed back close to the walls. Thankfully, the Minnows are so small, you can rotate them. And with the color-changing capability, they provide gorgeous accent lighting. The compact size of the Minnows with the power of an LED gives off a whole lot of light in a small space. We could light every area we needed to without any limitations.” Thomas worked with freelance lighting board programmer, Alex Amyot, on the KERO lighting design.
L1.2 studio light
The TV studio room’s dimensions are roughly 25’ x 28.’ A lighting grid was added to the room, which has 11-feet-high ceilings. The grid is installed 10-feet off the floor. Thomas added that the ability to daisy chain the power and DMX controls of the Brightline fixtures made it even easier to place the lights where he wanted. “That really helped us in such a tight space,” said Thomas.
Doug Tayler of Encore Broadcast Solutions reports that more government organizations are building their own studios for internal productions and broadcasts, and they typically want something they can operate with their own staff. “They want to be able to do everything themselves, from adjusting the lighting to operating the switcher. Thanks to technology like Brightline offers we can easily incorporate the ‘set it and forget it’ ethos into our design,” said Taylor. “One set uses a Planar 165” diagonal video wall. Lighting that set was a challenge, but Brightline and Earl handled it like a champ.”
Minnow profile spotlight
“This was a great team effort for the Collier County Sheriff’s department,” said Kathy Katz, Brightline managing partner. “We’re thrilled the design of our fixtures enabled exactly the look and operation they wanted. We foresee many more projects of this type next year and beyond. Kudos to all our partners for their work on this new studio.”

Best Practices for Transitioning to Energy-Efficient Lighting for Broadcast TV Studios
U.S. Stations Relying on Incandescent Fixtures Must Plan for LED Upgrades
by Kathy Katz, Co-Founder, Brightline
While there’s been a lot of talk about the banning of fluorescent fixtures and the need for stations to upgrade their tv studio lighting to LED, there’s been less discussion around the many stations still relying on incandescent lights. While these fixtures are a generation back from fluorescents, they remain a widely popular lighting source for broadcast tv lighting in the U.S. Those with incandescents, such as the widely used quartz-halogens, will skip over the fluorescent stage entirely. They’ll need to transition straight to LEDs once the reliable fixtures finally burn out.
As background – in December 2022, the Biden administration and the Department of Energy announced a rule to double the minimum light bulb efficiency to more than 120 lumens per watt for bulbs commonly used – which effectively banned compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. The rule is expected to go into full effect before the end of 2024. Lighting manufacturers were required to stop producing inefficient bulbs for the U.S. residential market as of January of 2023. In 2020, it was estimated that incandescent and halogen lightbulbs made up 30% of the entire lighting market.
A halogen lamp (also called tungsten halogen, quartz-halogen, and quartz iodine lamp) is an incandescent lamp consisting of a tungsten filament sealed in a compact transparent envelope that is filled with a mixture of an inert gas and a small amount of a halogen. Incandescent bulbs produce light by heating a metallic filament. Fluorescent lamps generate light by gas discharge, i.e. by exciting the gas.
Switching from flourescents to LEDs is very similar to switching out incandescents for LEDs, with the following exceptions. Incandescent lights are known for their ability to dim smoothly, which creates exactly the right ambience, essential for creating the optimal lighting for broadcast tv. Make sure the LEDs you purchase are dimmable with a solid lighting control system to manage them effectively. Be sure the staff is up to date on how to operate the new fixtures so you’re able to take advantage of all the benefits your new broadcast tv lighting design has to offer. There are many features on the latest LED lights that will be new to them.
Another consideration is the ability of incandescent lighting to produce a warm and continuous spectrum of light, while some LED lights can emit a very different color temperature. Carefully test the color quality in the LEDs you select so that they closely match your existing set up or what you’re looking for in your upgraded studio. Adjust the color temperature and intensity as needed. Most LEDs closely replicate the feeling of natural light with their adjustable color temperature.
Energy and heat reduction benefits are greater with the incandescent to LED switch since incandescents are far less energy efficient and generate more heat than fluorescents. That reduced heat output in your studio will result in adjustments to cooling the studio and could require changes to the ventilation and cooling systems. Keep track of the ROI on the LEDs. The reduced energy consumption and lower maintenance costs will result in substantial savings.
You’ll also need to stay up to date on the latest regulations and standards on LED lighting technology, including any energy-efficient lighting requirements. There will also be upgrades unveiled that you will want to consider to keep your broadcast tv lighting design up to date.
Lastly, since LEDs have a far longer lifespan than incandescents, the maintenance required is reduced, but LEDs will still need regular checks and replacements. Make sure you’ve got a maintenance plan in place to keep your new LED fixtures alive and kicking for many years to come. With the proper maintenance plan in place, the new lights could provide peak performance for a decade or more.
As lighting designer Bruce Aleksander writes in his column in TV Technology, broadcasters need an exit strategy when upgrading to more energy-efficient lighting. He offers: “While the cost of the new equipment can be substantial, the supporting infrastructure is actually simple by comparison to what was needed for incandescent.”
Aleksander points to the Brightline LED upgrade kit: “I admire that this company figured out how to extend the life of their legacy fixtures while maintaining exceptional performance. The upgraded light is fully DMX controllable, has an excellent 97 CRI (Color Rendering Index) at 5600K (daylight) color temperature, and all of their well-designed accessories still fit.”
The benefits of upgrading to more efficient LED lighting far outweigh staying with older generations of lighting design, but as discussed, the implications reach beyond simply swapping in a new fixture. Please get in touch with our team if you have any questions about what to expect or how to make the transition as smooth as possible for your studio and staff.

Watch the renovation at WJLA take shape:

Watch the renovation at WJLA take shape:

The TV studio room’s dimensions are roughly 25’ x 28.’ A lighting grid was added to the room, which has 11-feet-high ceilings. The grid is installed 10-feet off the floor.

City Club of Cleveland Adds 12 Brightline Studio Fixtures to its Forum Room for Dual-Purpose, On-Stage Lighting

Watch the renovation at WJLA take shape:

Please get in touch with our team if you have any questions about what to expect or how to make the transition as smooth as possible for your studio and staff.

and a worldwide center with diverse cultural influences.

City Club of Cleveland Adds 12 Brightline Studio Fixtures to its Forum Room for Dual-Purpose, On-Stage Lighting
