Bridgeville, Penn. – April 13, 2026 – Sinclair Broadcasting station WTOV sits atop a hill in Mingo Junction, Ohio. The site is near where the Academy Award-winning film The Deer Hunter was shot in 1978. A mural from the film still adorns a building at the bottom of the hill.
The station’s welcoming atmosphere reflects steady long-term management and a willingness to adopt a new visual style. At the same time, WTOV continues to focus on balanced, timely news. Vice President and General Manager Tim McCoy joined the station as a news videographer in 1981. Since then, he has helped guide WTOV through decades of change. Most recently, that work included a new design for a dynamic look and multi-platform news production.
Digital Enhanced Broadcast Facility
With Sinclair’s support, WTOV-TV transformed its studio into a digitally enhanced broadcast center. The space now supports live news programming with electronic and color-changing backgrounds. Sinclair’s Eric Castagne, Assistant Director of Television Production at Sinclair, led the electronic set design. Director of Television Production Mark Nadeau also supported the project.
Brightline Lighting Partner Sam Cercone, a proud Ohio native, visited the studio after it went online. He saw a strong lighting and set design that made the most of the existing space. Castagne and Nadeau created three distinct sets, including a dedicated green screen area. Two studio walls with interactive LED backgrounds sit behind the news anchors at a 90-degree angle. A new main anchor desk, an interview set, and a chroma key/sports broadcast area complete the improvements. In addition, the LED walls support full walk-and-talk ability, which enhances their immersive, high-end look.
New Lighting Fixtures and Upgrades
WTOV is lit with a combination of new Brightline LED fixtures and LED upgrades to its original SeriesONE fluorescent fixtures. Brightline Pup fresnels, mounted throughout the studio, add highlights. Together, the lighting creates an exciting canvas for future programming opportunities at WTOV.
In April 2009, WTOV became the first station in the Ohio Valley to broadcast local newscasts in 16:9 widescreen format. Today, it runs almost all of its syndicated programming in HD.
WTOV serves the Wheeling, West Virginia, and Steubenville, Ohio market. It is an affiliate of NBC and Fox.
